eighbourhood Watch by E-mail is a scheme enabling residents to recieve information about crime in the area, potential crime, security advice and other information, by e-mail, the information being supplied by the Police and sent by a local co-ordinator.
How does it work?
The scheme covers the majority of the Hastings & Rother Police area, there are plans to introduce it in other areas of Sussex Police. Each village, or in some case a groups of villages, and town has a local co-ordinator to send out the messages, they create an e-mail mailing list of those residents on their patch who have requested the e-mails. These co-ordinators, who are volunteers doing this in their spare time, receive daily e-mails from Sussex Police, detailing crimes in the area, warnings of criminal activity so that residents can be aware of bogus callers in the area etc. The Police will also send out details of incidents in the area, that they are looking for witnesses on, this information will also be sent out to those on the list. Other agencies, such as Trading Standards, Sussex Fire and Rescue and others will sometimes provide information or advice that they want distributed. The co-ordinators get information sent to them every day, but this does not mean that residents on the mailing list will get a message every day, the information the co-ordinator receives will cover a wide area, they will only use the items they consider relevent to their location. Because the co-ordinators are local, they can sometimes send out other local information which concerns their own village, this might be something like a local resident looking for a lost cat, or perhaps an important announcement from the Parish Council.
Is it secure?
Each co-ordinator creates a list of e-mail addresses, which is kept only on the co-ordinators computer, these details do not get sent anywhere else. Tehe messages are sent out using Blind Carbon Copy (Bcc), so a list of e-mail addresses does not get sent out with the messages, the only e-mail addresses that teach members of the scheme sees is their own and the co-ordinators. Each member supplies their name and e-mail address, it is not necessary to supply their home address, although some members do, but members are asked to give their area such as 'High Street, Bloggtown' or 'Church Road, Somewhere'. The only other information that is asked for is another form of contact such as a telephone, fax or mobile number, this is so the person can be contacted if there is a problem with e-mails. Sometimes members change their e-mail address and forget to tell the co-ordinator, the message comes back unsent, if the co-ordinator cannot contact the person they cannot get them back on the system and the member wonders why they have not had message for a long time.
